Prof. R. S. Nirjar BE (Civil), Jodhpur M.Tech. (Structures), Roorkee PhD, Edinburgh, (Scotland) Vice Chancellor, Gautam Buddha University
Confluence of the two an eminent Educationist and a Dynamic Administrator. Professor R. S. Nirjar has contributed and guided Technical Education and Training in the country for more than four decades. Prof. Nirjar started his career with serving in Indian Army as commissioned officer. After completing his M.Tech from Roorkee University in 1969 he joined BIT, Ranchi, as an Assistant Professor and served there till 1974. Later he joined PhD programme in the University of Edinburgh, Scotland on prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship. On his return to India, he took up his first teaching assignment as an Associate Professor at Birla Institute of Technology from 1977 to 1980. Later on he joined IIT-Kharagpur and worked there in the Civil Engineering Department from 1980 to 1986. He served as Professor & Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, Institute of Engineering and Technology, Lucknow from 1986 to 1988.
Prof. Nirjar is regarded as an innovative teacher imparting quality technical training and as an eminent researcher who inspired paradigmatic changes in the areas of Structural Engineering, Building Sciences, Housing, Technical Education Policies, and Academic Management. Not to mention, Prof. Nirjar has numerous research papers published in reputed National and International journals and referred widely in the field of Civil engineering.
During the period from 1988 to 1992, Prof. Nirjar had a stint as the Founder Principal of Bundelkhand Engineering College, Jhansi and later as Director, Institute of Engineering & Technology, Lucknow. Thereafter, he had served as Principal, Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College, Allahabad from 1992 to 1995 and as Principal, Malaviya Regional Engineering College, Jaipur from 1995 to 1999. During his tenure of seven years in Regional Engineering Colleges, he established academic collaboration between Regional Engineering Colleges in India and Universities in United Kingdom.
As Member Secretary in AICTE, New Delhi from 1999 onwards and later as its Chairman during 2001 he rendered a creditable service to promote the quality of Technical Education in India. Recognising the global importance of Information Technology and the urgent need for developing trained manpower in Software in India, he took active steps at AICTE to create additional seats in the I.T. related branches in the Engineering Colleges all over India. The Accreditation of Technical Education Institutions got formalized and standardized under his supervision and guidance.
Prof. Nirjar has been Member of several Professional Bodies and Committees. To cite a few, he has been Member Board of Governors of IIT Kanpur, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, IIM Indore; Management Development Institute, Gurgaon, National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai; National Institute of Forge & Foundry Technology, Ranchi, Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Gwalior and Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad, NIT Bhopal, NIT Jaipur, and also a Member of UNESCO Task Force Committee for Technical Education, National Research Projects’ Expert Committee, MHRD; Expert Advisory Committee, Department of Science and Technology; Expert Committee for Thermal Power Projects, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. Prof. Nirjar was also the Chairman, Board of Governors, National Institute of Technology (Deemed University), Hamirpur (HP) and a Member, Economic Policy & Reform Council, Government of Rajasthan. Prof. Nirjar was elected as the President of Indian Society for Technical Education, New Delhi for two terms of form 2000-2002 to 2002-2005. Later in 2006 he was facilitated with Honorary Fellowship of the society as an extended gratitude for his services and contribution in imparting quality technical training in the country
With a mission to create a community of scholars who can inspire growth, continuity and a meaningful transformation for multidimensional growth of the society, Prof. Nirjar has now taken over the responsibility of setting up a world class university in the real sense of the term at Greater Noida, Gautam Budha University, Gautam Budha Nagar, as its first Vice Chancellor.
Dr. Navneet Vasani obtained M.Tech. Degree from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur. He was awarded Honorary Degree by "Florida Atlantic University, U.S.A. in recognition for his outstanding contribution in the field of higher education. He was awarded Honorary Fellowship by Indian Society for Technical Education, New Delhi for his contribution in the field of Technical Education in the country. He taught for about three decades at Under Graduate and Post Graduate Engineering Programmes. He presented research papers and chaired technical sessions at National and International Conferences. He served for Government of Gujarat as a Joint Director of Technical Education. He pioneered the Computerized Merit Based Admission System for Professional Courses. He served in Gujarat University as Vice Chancellor. He was Advisor - Science & Technology to Hon'ble Chief Minister of Gujarat. At this time, the prestigious projects of 'Science City' and 'Info City' were planned and implemented.
He worked as a Member on important Committees of University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). He served as a Chairman - Central Regional Committee of All India Council for Technical Education and as a Notional Vice President, Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE). He served as a Founder Member of the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). He served the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI) as a Chairman of Education Committee as well as Information Technology Committee. He also served as the Chairman of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Institute of Technology, Surat.
He learned the need of Quality Professional institutes in the private sector in the State of Gujarat and played a pioneering role for policy framework for Private Participation in Higher Education for the State of Gujarat. He also played a pioneering role in establishing Nirma Institute of Technology (NIT), Nirma Institute of Management (NIM), Nirma Institute of Diploma Studies (NIDS), Nirma University and Institute of Pharmacy (IP). He is the Executive Chairman of Nirma Education and Research Foundation and the First Vice Chancellor of Nirma University of Science & Technology
He is distinguished Member of National Executive Council of Indian Society for Technical Education.
Dr. T. Karunakaran served during 1997-2007 as Vice Chancellor of Gandhigram Rural University and two terms as Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi Chitrakoot Rural Development University. Prior to that he spent nineteen years in four of the IITs besides advanced Institutes like TIFR Bombay and INRIA, Paris.
Dr. Karunakaran left IIT Madras in 1988 to become the Director of Rural Technology Centre of Gandhigram and the experience he gained by living in a poor tribal village Valayapatti enabled him to formulate the concept of Technology Resource Centre which has been experimented in a few states.
Dr. Karunakaran’s innovations include the TECHNORACY module to empower SHG groups of Women to become confident in handling technologically complex products and the AGRINDUS model of value addition to agricultural products. He had the unique experience of working in the eighties on the RICHES Project (initiated by Dr. P.V Indiresan, director IIT Madras) as Planning Officer in IIT Madras which later became popular as PURA through inputs from Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
Dr. Karunakaran was a member, along with Anna Hazare, in the Gram Swaraj Committee of Madhya Pradesh and similar one for Panchayat Empowerment in Maharashtra. He was in the Executive Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, advisor to Flensburg Universities, Germany and member of many responsible committees in India and elsewhere.
His ideas and adventures form a prominent part of a recent (2000) Penguin Book, Bapukuti, by Rajni Bakshi wherein his biography is presented along with veterans like Baba Amte, Aruna Roy, Medha Patkar and others.
Prof. N.R. Shetty, President, ISTE New Delhi
Prof. N.R. Shetty had a brilliant academic career and obtained his B.Sc. (Honours) in Physics with Electronics as a special subject from Madras University, M.Sc. (Opto-Electronics) from University of Essex (U.K.) and Ph.D. from Dept. of Electrical Engineering of IIT Bombay. He had held the position of Professor and Principal of Karnataka Regional Engineering College, Surathkal, Vice-Chancellor (two terms) of Bangalore University, Member Secretary and Chief Executive, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, New Delhi.
Prof. Shetty has over thirty five years of teaching experience at Post Graduate Level and Research Experience in the areas of Microwave Engineering, Quantum and Opto Electronics, Solid State Physical Electronics, etc. He has published over thirty papers in International/National Journals and edited ten proceedings which include
proceedings of ISTE Winter/Summer Schools for teachers in the areas of Microwave and Communication Engineering and Entrepreneurship Development.
He was a Visiting Professor and Fulbright Scholar at University of Texas, Austin, USA and a UNESCO Fellow at Essex University, Colchester and Standard Telecommunication Labs. Harlow (U.K.) and was the receipt of Visitorship of the British Council to visit British Universities. He is a recipient of Shiromani Vikas Award (1993), Bharat Vikas Award (1996), Bhargava Award (1997) and Bharat Ratna Sir M.V. National Parisara Ratna Award (1999).
He has visited Beijing, Shandong, Shanghai and Shenzhen in China as a member of the Indian goodwill delegation sponsored by Ministry of Culture of Peoples Republic of China. He went on a study tour to Germany, UK and USA under UNDP Project. He has also visited Egyptian Universities as a Member of the high power delegation of UGC to establish collaboration between Indian and Egyptian Universities and also Headed the delegation sponsored by UGC to Kyrghystan (former Soviet Russia) to establish linkage with Kyrghy State National University.
Prof. Shetty was elected in 1997-1998 as National President, ISTE, New Delhi. He is a member, Board of Governors, National Institute of Technology, Warangal and member of various Committees/Councils of State Governments, Central Government, Universities, UGC, AIU, AICTE and MHRD. He was also a member of Executive Council of AICTE and Chairman, South West Regional Committee, AICTE, Bangalore.
Presently, he is Chairman, National Advisory Committee on Entrepreneurship Development Cell, Dept. of Science & Technology, Government of India, New Delhi, Chairman, ISTE Working Professionals Learning Project, Bangalore, Chairman, Sir M. Visveswaraiah Memorial Foundation, Bangalore and Executive Committee Member, VTU, Belgaum. Prof. Shetty is President, ISTE for the term 2006-2008. He has been elected as Vice-President of International Federation of Engineering Education Societies (IFEES), Washington DC, USA for a period of two years. Dr. Shetty has re-elected as President, ISTE for the term of 2009-2011.

Dr. A.A. Ghatole, born on 29th August, 1948 is presently Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University, Lonere-Raigad. Before joining as Vice-Chancellor, he was Principal/Director at College of Engineering, Pune during 2001-2005 and Principal at Government College of Engineering, Amaravati during 1994-2001. He holds a B.E. (Electrical), Nagpur University, M.Tech. (Electrical) and Ph.D Electrical from IIT, Mumbai in the field of High Power Semiconductor Devices.
Over the last 33 years, he has been actively involved in the field of Technical Education as Academician, Researcher, Teacher, Planner and Administrator and handled various aspects of Technical Education including Management, Engineering, Technology etc
He has developed a vision of autonomy for the College of Engineering, Pune and he became the first Director of this long historical Institute. Government of Maharashtra has declared College of Engineering, Pune as one of the Lead Institutes under World Bank Project. He has implemented credit system quite effectively.
He has widely traveled within and outside the country. He has lectured extensively in various National and International Conferences and has earned unique honour and distinctions. Best Teacher Award, of Govt. of Maharashtra was bestowed upon him during the academic year 1998–99. He has also received Quality Environment Award in the year 2002. He has to his credit 12 Ph.D. Students, 3 books and number of research scholars working under him for Ph.D. degree
Under his able and effective leadership, the University reached to a newer height and gained a feather in the cap by receiving the UGC recognition under section 12(B). Taking into consideration his active involvement in technical education, AICTE also entrusted a responsibility to Act as Chairman of Western Regional Council for three states for advising and assisting the council on issues and strategies on quality and quantity in the technical education. He is also the Executive Member of Indian Society of Technical Education.
